So, mobile communications as Rheingold talks about in his Smart Mobs seem SUPER FUN.
While the idea that I could find my soul mate while walking down the street seems like a good time, I think that we could use this technology to better society.
For instance, we could label certain people as criminals or offenders so that a person might know where to avoid people.
Could we also go so far as to put business information out there, so it would be like recieving a business card when you walk by a person? That would be like advertising yourself while you sleep! Of course, you'd want to turn off your phone while you are sleeping or in your house at all so as to avoid attracting stalkers....

I'm not sure about the soul mate thing but I really like the idea of mobile communications. I think it might increase our social network. I think it is very cool if I'm setting in the bus or the metro and I find some one "through his profile" that we share the same intrest. So we can have a healthy conversation while we are in the buss.
Anna,
I know that mobile "dating" has been done in the UK via cell phones and has been moderately successful. I'm not sure if it'd work in the US; US mobile users still find text messaging intrusive and the whole idea kind of strange (Europe is way ahead of us with mobile/SMS technology so that could be why it works for them). The business card idea is actually a great idea; I haven't heard of anyone doing it thus far. Even though its a great concept, the question is do you want to know the information of the people sitting near you (does it really matter)? I would definitely want to submit my "digital business card" for advertising/networking purposes, but I don't know if I'd really care to see other peoples. Although we'd share some geographic location, I could probably acquire more relevant/meaningful business cards through traditional networking within my industry..
Hmmm....this is a tough one to parse, but I think I'm going to have to take privacy for 500 Anna...LOL!!!
We are walking a thin rope with this one. We already have issues with the government accidentally letting fire walls fall and letting random people have at it with confidential information (ie-social security numbers). I feel like this would simply make it easier for information leakage.
